2.00 – 4yo Juvenile Hurdle (2 miles, Grade 1)
Selection – WE HAVE A DREAM (15/8) generally
1 POINT WIN
I am taking on Apples Shakira here who represents no value at all in my opinion. I would much rather be siding with WE HAVE A DREAM, who carries an unbeaten record in the UK having won all four starts impressively, including a Grade one victory at Chepstow on heavy ground. He seems very versatile regarding the ground and he missed Cheltenham due to a small setback, but that means he comes here fresher than most and his form is rock solid. Obviously it’s not ideal having to give Apples Shakira 7lbs, but he seems the perfect hurdler, who travels, battles and carries a lovely turn of foot. He is sure to be involved here under Daryl Jacob (4-4 on him) and he is open to further improvement.
2.40 Kempton – RAVEN’S LADY (11/2) generally – 1 POINT WIN
Marco Botti’s yard are absolutely flying of late and his filly RAVEN’S LADY will be a tough nut to crack. Her figures at this track read 2-1-2-3, so we know she likes it here whilst a mark of 90 slightly underestimates her to be honest and she gets in here on a nice low weight 8-9. She went extremely close in a Listed race at Pontrefact behind two high-class sorts, so we know is capable at a higher level. Her best efforts have came over 6 furlongs and with Andrea Atzeni in the saddle, a big run is expected.
Apache Song-James Eustace
Wincanton 3.05pm 1m 7 ½ f (Class 3) 0-125 Mares Handicap Hurdle
A maiden on the level for Rod Millman, Apache Song joined James Eustace for a Hurdling campaign, for whom they picked up a Novice Hurdle at Market Rasen on Good Ground. He finished a well beaten 6th at Kempton a couple of outings later but that race has the look of a very hot contest! Kayf Grace (Nicky Henderson) was the winner giving plenty of weight all round and Apache Song was 18 lengths adrift. Kayf Grace was thought good enough to contest The Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham’s Festival but fell and is probably a good bit better than her current mark somewhere in the mid 130’s. Azzerti was 9 ½ lengths adrift of the winner in 3rd at Kempton and has since won off 127 and is currently rated 136. The horse who finished 5th, Unison was only a length and a half in front of Apache Song and that horse has won his last 2 races off 135 & 140 and is currently rated 1461! Even Maquisard, who was a further 24 lengths behind (Apache Song) in 8th, won yesterday at Huntingdon admittedly off a 10 lb lower mark.
Apache Song pulled very hard for the entire first circuit that day so did well to hang in there up the home straight having come off the bridle and dropped to the rear, so the run could be upgraded in my view. Next time, back in calmer waters, in a 6 runner contest at Sedgefield, she was travelling best when the favourite fell in front of her and she was brought down at the 3rd last.
