Christmas Blog with DG Tips
Firstly a massive Merry Christmas to you all. As you all know the Christmas period is always a fantastic time for horse racing and this blog will go over some of the key races coming up and highlight a few horses to keep an eye on.
Boxing Day is the major highlight for all racing fans and The King George takes centre stage. Won last year by the superstar that is Thistlecrack this year’s renewal looks incredibly competitive with at least 5 horses seemingly having outstanding claims.
Back to retain his crown, Thistlecrack comes into this race with a lot to prove. Injured for the latter part of last season he reappeared at Newbury a few weeks ago when tiring late on into a less than impressive 5th. He has it all to prove after that run.
Has won his last 4 in impressive fashion, undoubtedly has his quirks but we know this track suits him perfectly and he looks the most likely winner if he gets into his usual rhythm up front.
Perhaps a little under-rated, I think he was ridden poorly last time out and probably should have won with a bit in hand. That’s racing but he remains a progressive horse and he will be well suited by the speed in this race.
Bristol De Mai
A very interesting contender, destroyed his rivals at Haydock last time out. There is a slight suspicion he is a better horse at Haydock than anywhere else but even so it was hard not to be impressed by that run. He seems to be improving all the time, my main worry however is that he will face some pace opposition up front here.
A career best run last time out in the Ladbrokes Trophy. I loved the way he travelled that day and I do think he will be suited by the way this race is run. He’s a major each way player but I do have a slight suspicion he is better going left handed. I may be wrong but it is a little niggling problem I have with him in here.
It is sure to be a great race, I’m torn between Might Bite and Thistlecrack and for that reason I will simply just sit back and watch this great race unfold.
Every year the day after Boxing day plays host to the stamina sapping Coral Welsh Grand National. Always a gruelling affair this race is as difficult as they come but I’ve listed a few below that have solid claims.
Tops the weights in here. A likeable horse who has shown a liking for this sort of a test, I’m not particularly keen backing a horse carrying top weight in a race like this but he does have obvious claims.
Rock The Kasbah
An interesting runner, ran well over a similar trip at the end of last year and isn’t badly weighted on the best of his form. May find a few too good but as an each way play he isn’t the worst bet you’ll find. May be worth betting in running, can be a problematic jumper.
Chase The Spud
Reappeared with a taking win at Haydock. That may have ruined his handicap mark and he has struggled in this race before. Fergal has his string in fine order though so it is impossible to rule him out.
Still in contention at the 4th last in last year’s Midlands Grand National, he reappeared with a fine effort in behind Present Man at Wincanton and of 145 still looks well enough treated to go close. Again may find a few too good but as an each way play is solid enough
Beware The Bear
Ran a bizarre race last time out but it was hard not to be impressed with the way he finished his race. Can’t afford to hit flat spots in a race like this but he quite clearly stays strongly and Nicky Henderson has his yard in flying form.
2nd to Beware the Bear last time out. Looked the winner 2 out but for a late charge, he will come on for that run and is well weighted at present. Usually performs well in these types of races and his trainer can ready one for a big day like this.
Looks made for a test like this, doesn’t know when he is beat and does seem to have improved this year. Does bring potential to the table which is more than you can say about most but his jumping remains a slight worry.
Raz De Maree
2nd in this last year of only 1lb lower, that was huge run and given the fact he comes here after 3 prep runs he looks primed to go very close. A strong stayer and clearly relishes a test like this, he’s too big a price not to get involved.
A tough race but some good bets in here, keep the stakes small and spread the betting.
Other races to note include the Kauto Star Novice Chase at Kempton (including Mia’s Storm and Black Corton), Unibet Christmas Hurdle at Kempton (including Buveur D’air). Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton (including Optimus Prime and Special Tiara), The Paddy Rewards Novice Chase at Leopardstown (including Footpad and Death Duty) and The Leopardstown Christmas Chase (including Sizing John and Yorkhill).
Away from the jumps we also have some highly competitive AW action on offer from Wolverhampton and Lingfield.
